Short Workouts Reap Big Benefits

Shorter is better when it comes to losing weaight.

Ten minutes of brisk exercise triggers metabolic changes that last at least an hour. The unfair news for panting newbies: The more fit you are, the more benefits you just might be getting.

We all know that exercise and a good diet are important for health, protecting against heart disease and diabetes, among other conditions. But what exactly causes the health improvement from working up a sweat or from eating, say, more olive oil than saturated fat? And are some people biologically predisposed to get more benefit than others?

They’re among questions that metabolic profiling, a new field called metabolomics, aims to answer in hopes of one day optimizing those benefits — or finding patterns that may signal risk for disease and new ways to treat it.

“We’re only beginning to catalog the metabolic variability between people,” says Dr. Robert Gerszten of Massachusetts General Hospital, whose team just took a step toward that goal.

The researchers measured biochemical changes in the blood of a variety of people: the healthy middle-aged, some who became short of breath with exertion, and marathon runners.

First, in 70 healthy people put on a treadmill, the team found more than 20 metabolites that change during exercise, naturally produced compounds involved in burning calories and fat and improving blood-sugar control. Some weren’t known until now to be involved with exercise. Some revved up during exercise, like those involved in processing fat. Others involved with cellular stress decreased with exercise.

Those are pretty wonky findings, a first step in a complex field. But they back today’s health advice that even brief bouts of activity are good.

“Ten minutes of exercise has at least an hour of effects on your body,” says Gerszten, who found some of the metabolic changes that began after 10 minutes on the treadmill still were measurable 60 minutes after people cooled down.

Your heart rate rapidly drops back to normal when you quit moving, usually in 10 minutes or so. So finding lingering biochemical changes offers what Gerszten calls “tantalizing evidence” of how exercise may be building up longer-term benefits.

Back to the blood. Thinner people had greater increases in a metabolite named niacinamide, a nutrient byproduct that’s involved in blood-sugar control, the team from Mass General and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard reported last week in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Checking a metabolite of fat breakdown, the team found people who were more fit — as measured by oxygen intake during exercise — appeared to be burning more fat than the less fit, or than people with shortness of breath, a possible symptom of heart disease.

The extremely fit — 25 Boston Marathon runners — had ten-fold increases in that metabolite after the race. Still other differences in metabolites allowed the researchers to tell which runners had finished in under four hours and which weren’t as speedy.

“We have a chemical snapshot of what the more fit person looks like. Now we have to see if making someone’s metabolism look like that snapshot, whether or not that’s going to improve their performance,” says Gerszten, whose ultimate goal is better cardiac care.

Don’t expect a pill ever to substitute for a workout — the new work shows how complicated the body’s response to exercise is, says metabolomics researcher Dr. Debbie Muoio of Duke University Medical Center.

But scientists are hunting nutritional compounds that might help tweak metabolic processes in specific ways. For example, Muoio discovered the muscles of diabetic animals lack enough of a metabolite named carnitine, and that feeding them more improved their control of blood sugar. Now, Muoio is beginning a pilot study in 25 older adults with pre-diabetes to see if carnitine supplements might work similarly in people who lack enough.

Next up: With University of Vermont researchers, she’s testing how metabolic changes correlate with health measures in a study of people who alternate between a carefully controlled Mediterranean diet and higher-fat diets.

“The longterm hope is you could use this in making our way toward personalized medicine,” Muoio says.

My Take: I know we live in a world where weight loss pills and fad diets compete daily for the top placement among the cure for muffin tops and how to get us all into our skinny jeans for life. But I have to agree, and there isn’t a Denver personal injury defense lawyer anywhere who can argue this one: Exercise is the only real and lasting way to lose fat and keep it of. Don’t let the Denver CO construction attorneys, or any attorneys out there tell you that your claim against a diet pill manufacturer for not delivering on its promise to get you thin again will go anywhere. You need to show proof you held up your end of the weight loss bargain. What is that? Typically all weight loss products will imply or outright state that without proper diet and exercise, their products’ effectiveness will wane.

Choosing a Style for the Bathroom

One thing to consider when changing the overall style of a bathroom is the idea that the theme inside the bathroom can be unique but it should still be something that is going to offer an overall smooth connection to the rest of the rest of the home even if something like the bathroom vanities is done in such a style that the colors are completely different from the rest of the home. It is usually not too difficult to choose a design for the bathroom that is pleasing and for the most part as long as someone picks out a design they like, it will look nice.

Auto Dealerships See Price Increase

There has been a lot of activity on car lots lately and interestingly, even though many people’s paychecks have been appropriate for buying new vehicles, there has been a surge in interest of Virginia used cars for sale for a few important reasons. One reason is because used cars these days are much more reliable than they once were and this means that when a person buys a vehicle that’s just a few years old, they will likely be able to use it for a decade or more given the improvements in manufacturing that have covered the industry.

Hurricanes Next Big Worry For Embattled Gulf

hurricane

Source: Associated Press

As hurricane season approaches, the giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico takes weather forecasters into nearly uncharted waters.

The Gulf is a superhighway for hurricanes that form or explode over pools of hot water, then usually move north or west toward the coast. The site of the sunken rig is along the general path of some of the worst storms ever recorded, including Hurricane Camille, which wiped out the Mississippi coast in 1969, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The season officially starts Tuesday, and while scientists seem to agree that the sprawling slick isn’t likely to affect the formation of a storm, the real worry is that a hurricane might turn the millions of gallons of floating crude into a crashing black surf.

Some fear a horrific combination of damaging winds and large waves pushing oil deeper into estuaries and wetlands and coating miles of debris-littered coastline in a pungent, sticky mess.

And the worst effects of an oil-soaked storm surge might not be felt for years: If oil is pushed deep into coastal marshes that act as a natural speed bump for storm surges, areas including New Orleans could be more vulnerable to bad storms for a long time.

Experts say there are few, if any, studies on such a scenario.

In this “untreaded water … it’s tough to theorize about what would happen,” said Joe Bastardi, chief long-range hurricane forecaster with AccuWeather.com.

The lone precedent, experts agree, is the summer of 1979, when storms hampered efforts to contain a spill from a Mexican rig called Ixtoc 1 that eventually dumped 140 million gallons off the Yucatan Peninsula. Hurricane Henri, a Category 1 storm, damaged a 310-ton steel cap designed to stop the leak that would become the worst peacetime spill in history.

Still, while oil from that spill coated miles of beaches in Texas and Mexico, tropical storms and unseasonable cold fronts that year helped reverse offshore currents earlier than normal and drive oil away from the coast. Storms also helped disperse some of the oil, Bastardi said.

“That’s what I think would happen this time,” he said. “I’m sure a hurricane would do a great deal of diluting the oil, spreading it out where the concentrations would be much less damaging.”

At least 19 million gallons, according to the latest estimates, have leaked from the seabottom 5,000 feet below the surface since the April 20 explosion of BP PLC’s Deepwater Horizon rig, which killed 11. Syrupy oil has crept into Louisiana’s marshes, coating plants, killing some birds and threatening wetlands.

The threat to the marshes could have implications lasting well beyond this hurricane season. Louisiana already has lost huge swaths of coastal wetlands in recent decades, and the oil is a major threat to the long-term viability of that delicate ecosystem.

If the plants that hold the marshes together were to die at the roots, the base would wash away, leaving deeper water and less of a buffer for hurricanes, said Joseph Suhayda, director of the Louisiana State University Hurricane Center.

“That would increase the amount of surge inland,” Suhayda said.

Even without considering hurricanes, there is uncertainty about whether marsh cane and other plants will die to the roots or just above the surface from this oil spill. If the plants’ roots survive, they could come back over time. If not, the results could be catastrophic.

“I don’t think anybody is going to know precisely. It depends on the quantity of the oil,” said David White, a biological sciences professor at Loyola University New Orleans.

There is a chance that a hurricane or tropical storm could offer wetlands a reprieve from the oil, at the expense of areas farther inland. A storm surge of several feet, even if it is carrying oil, would pass over the top of the outer, low-lying marshes and disperse the mess in less toxic amounts, Suhayda said.

But such a storm could also push oil into freshwater marshes where ducks and geese thrive, White said.

Experts are predicting a busy hurricane season with powerful storms. Bastardi predicts seven named storms, five hurricanes and two or three major hurricanes will have an effect on land this year. Colorado State University researchers Philip Klotzbach and William Gray predict a 69 percent chance that at least one major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. and a 44 percent chance that a major hurricane will hit the Gulf Coast.

On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted 14 to 23 tropical storms this year, including up to seven major hurricanes. “This season could be one of the more active on record,” agency Administrator Jane Lubchenco said.

Hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November. Early season storms are uncommon; the busy part of the season is in August through October. Stronger storms typically form during this time, like Katrina did in August of 2005.

A hurricane like Katrina “would be a worst-case scenario” with oil pushed far ashore, said National Wildlife Federation scientist Doug Inkley.

“It would suffocate the vegetation. You’d get oiled birds and other animals,” Inkley said. “It’s virtually impossible to clean up oil.”

It could well be August before the current leak is stanched. After several failed attempts to contain it, BP has been siphoning some of the oil through a mile-long tube, but more continues to escape. BP is drilling another well to relieve pressure from the leak in hopes of a permanent fix, but that could take weeks.

And oil rigs are often evacuated ahead of hurricanes, which would interrupt those containment efforts.

“It wouldn’t take a hurricane to create a mess, even a tropical storm could cause problems,” said William Hawkins, director the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast research laboratory.

A hurricane could also push the oil in a new direction.

“I think what worries us most is the hurricane taking oil to areas that probably wouldn’t be hit hard otherwise, like the Florida Panhandle and Texas,” said Gregory Stone, director of the Coastal Studies Institute at LSU.

Even though the oil has yet to reach Florida, state Attorney General Bill McCollum recently sent a letter to BP asking the company to assure him it would pay up if a tropical storm or hurricane pushes oil ashore, which he believes “will capture the oil in its path and deposit it much further inland.”

Bastardi said that in the near term at least, the storms themselves remain the chief threat.

“If a Category 3 hurricane is headed to the Texas Gulf Coast — and this is simply theoretical — I wouldn’t be worried as much about damage from the oil, as the damage from the hurricane,” Bastardi said.

My Take: Things aren’t that simple anymore. Sure, you can buy E cigarette starter kits and give up tobacco the fun way. You can search for cheap auto insurance online and even find boyfriends, jobs, vacation housing, pets and a house cleaner. But neither the e cig nor the car insurance quotes can do much to address the disasters taking place around the globe, man-made and naturally formed.

It seems the globe is in a kind of panic reactive state, with earthquakes, floods, volcanoes and oil spills taking over our environment and the economy and job losses, coupled with protracted war in the Middle East giving us little hope for peace of mind.

Seems like not even the highest paid slip and fall lawyer could pay his or her way out of our messes, not even the Hillsboro OR car accident lawyer, or the high-priced Beverly Hills doctors, it seems, can afford to do much to alleviate the problems that are dominating the planet right now.

Woods Told No Dating Through Divorce

woods

Source: ABC News

Troubles for Tiger Woods’ continue as his attorney tells him to prepare for court and stay away from women in the meantime.

His style has been cramped by the time off, his marital woes, his mistress scandal, and his neck injury. Us Weekly reports that Tiger Woods has been ordered to lay off women altogether by his legal team until his divorce with wife Elin Nordegren is finalized. As far as anyone has been able to tell (and the paparazzi has given Tiger Woods no slack), he seems to have only been seen with only one woman since divorce proceedings became more than mere rumor. But an insider told Us Weekly that Woods’ legal team wants him to not date at all until the divorce is in the books.

“Elin’s building a character case [based on his serial philandering],” the source told the celebrity gossip magazine. “Elin’s team is watching [Tiger's] every move.”

One might wonder what would be the point, considering Tiger Woods’ already sensationalized and overly publicized alleged sexual romps and affairs. According to the insider, it is simply to get more money.

“She wants more money than Michael Jordan’s ex got.”

And that was a lot of money. When basketball great Michael Jordan divorced his wife, the settlement netted her $168 million. So how much money does Elin Nordegren expect to get from her allegedly straying (it must be remembered that there has been no public admission by Tiger Woods to any of the myriad relationships of which he has been accused) husband? Bill Zwecker of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Elin Nordegren was seeking full custody of the couple’s two children and a $750 million divorce settlement.

After November’s car wreck and the subsequent flood of mistress allegations that hit the tabloids, it began to appear that Elin Nordegren was perhaps willing to work through the mistress scandal and controversy with Woods and even attempt to keep their five-year marriage intact. The former model even reportedly supported Woods through his weeks in rehab in Mississippi. But afterward, reports have placed the two in a more distancing relationship. There has also been a report that the two aren’t on speaking terms any longer as well.

But no dating until the divorce for Tiger? Although some might consider that a bit drastic and over-cautious, it must be remembered that nearly two dozen women have claimed to have been Woods’ mistresses during his five years of marriage to Nordegren and that Tiger Woods himself has admitted to “transgressions” publicly. And if there is any truth at all to the reports that Woods admitted to sleeping with 121 women during counseling with his wife present — and then omitting number 122, his young next-door neighbor — it might be wise for Tiger Woods to heed the reported advice of his legal team.

My Take: Divorce is ugly, no matter how you slice it. But when it comes to divorce and the most famous golfer in the world and salacious allegations of serial infidelity, nothing gets more juicier and you can bet the lawyers are lining up to see where they might either get a piece of the action or at least talk about it over drinks.

There isn’t a lawyer in the country who wouldn’t want to be on either side of this divorce fiasco. Every criminal defense attorney, divorce attorney and Bergen County collaborative lawyer will be salivating over every detail that comes from just the pre-divorce settlement process. Then, once the case hits the courtroom, as it likely will, you can bet that every federal lawyer, New Jersey alimony attorney and NJ divorce attorney will be tuned in to see how the money, the allegations of rampant infidelity, and the bitter battle that is sure to take place over Tiger’s future earnings, not to mention his children’s role in all of this, all shakes out.

Necessities of Home Insurance

One of the important aspects of obtaining the proper level of insurance for one’s basic life necessities is the idea that it’s not a good idea to own a home if there isn’t also an insurance policy attached to that home’s ownership. In fact, when a person visits a Scottsdale State Farm agent, they might be surprised to find out that certain banks won’t even offer a loan to a person for a home unless there is already a plan for a home owner’s insurance policy to be purchased as most banks consider insurance one of the most important parts of the purchasing process.

Bill Aims to Charge Companies For Outsourcing Calls

india_call_center_1016

Source: Associated Press

In a bid to reduce outsourcing of U.S. jobs, a Democratic senator said on Sunday he will push legislation to make companies inform customers when their calls were being transferred outside the United States and charge companies for those transferred calls.

“This bill will not only serve to maintain call center jobs currently in the United States, but also provide a reason for companies that have already outsourced jobs to bring them back,” Senator Charles Schumer said in statement.

Customers calling 800 numbers are often transferred overseas, and in such cases the bill would mandate that callers be told where their calls were rerouted.

Companies would also be required to certify to the Federal Trade Commission annually that they were complying with the requirement, and face penalties if they did not certify.

Schumer’s bill would also impose a $0.25 excise tax on any customer service call placed inside the United States which is transferred to an agent in a foreign location. The fee would be assessed on the company that transferred the call.

Customer service call centers for everything from commercial mortgage loans companies to pharmaceuticals have become increasingly popular with businesses in recent years to deal with questions ranging from billing to technical support.

But the practice brings frequent complaints from customers who say their issues are not resolved or that representatives are merely providing scripted responses.

Computer Services top the list of these outsourced call centers, with many of the service calls being routed to India and handled by reps going by American names such as “Bob,” and “Charles,” but speaking in heavily Indian accents.

Schumer said the most popular countries for outsourcing of U.S. call centers included India, Indonesia, Ireland, the Philippines and South Africa, places where workers generally receive lower wages and work longer hours than their U.S. counterparts.

____________________________________________

My Take: It’s true. I’ve had Indian call reps from Pakistan to New Delhi handle a wide range of my customer services calls and it can be downright irritating. Primarily, it’s my HP laptop service calls that I have had routed out of the country the most, and I’m not sure why HP has to send so much of its business overseas when we are supposed to be on the cutting edge of IT right here in America, home of HP and Microsoft and Apple and Intel and all the other giants of the industry.

Commercial mortgage brokers New York, small business financing firms, and probably even manufacturers from the mid-west are opting for the outsourcing method of providing us with customer service. But frankly, whether you’re a small business finance giant like CITI or a Silicon Valley IT icon, it seems that with today’s economic situation, consumer confidence challenges, and the overall feeling of disappointment with the war and foreign “involvement,” the companies that do more right here in our own backyard will be more popular with consumers, which means more money for their bottom line.

BP Benefactors Weigh Fallout From Oil Spill

bp_logo11

SOURCE: Los Angeles Times

Four years ago, when the giant oil company BP donated $1 million to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, the contribution seemed like a good deal for both an oil company trying to burnish its environmental credentials and a venue trying to draw more visitors.

Then, last month, a BP oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, causing one of the largest oil spills in U.S. history. With the BP Sea Otter Habitat set to open this week, a potential feel-good moment has turned into a public relations landmine.

The aquarium is planning a press preview Thursday, but BP officials might not attend.

“They said they did not want to hurt the reputation of the institution,” said Jerry Schubel, the aquarium’s president. “They even asked, ‘Would you prefer that we not be there?’ I said, ‘No. Without your support we could not have done this.’ I hope they continue to support us.”

Since the spill, aquarium officials have discussed how best to handle BP’s sponsorship of the new venue, Schubel said, although he added that there had been no debate about removing BP’s name. “That never occurred to me. We’re comfortable about the course we have taken,” he said. In the wake of the spill, the aquarium will host a forum this fall on ocean oil drilling, he said. “The challenge is, ‘What can we learn from this going forward?’ ”

Nonprofit institutions often face difficult decisions when big corporate givers hit highly publicized rough spots. One of the largest examples in recent years involved Enron, which was a major giver to cultural and educational charities.

The University of Missouri kept its Kenneth Lay Chair in Economics, despite faculty objections that the Enron chief executive’s $1.1-million contribution in 1999 had been tainted by the scandal that engulfed the Houston energy company two years later.

The university came to a different conclusion in 2004 about its newly opened Paige Sports Arena, which was named in honor of Elizabeth Paige Laurie by her parents, who made a fortune from Wal-Mart and contributed $25 million. The venue became the Mizzou Arena after ABC’s “20/20″ revealed that young Paige had paid a fellow student to do her course work at USC.

How institutions handle such questions depends largely on whether the donor’s scandalous acts are directly at odds with the recipient’s mission, said Paul Dunn, an expert on corporate ethics at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, and author of a 2008 study, “Strategic Responses by a Nonprofit When a Donor Becomes Tainted.”

At an art museum, “you may have a donor who says, ‘I’m very concerned about the environment, therefore I wouldn’t give to your museum because BP has polluted the gulf,’ ” Dunn said. But he doubts that such complaints could gain traction. “I fail to see a connection between oil [pollution] and paintings —- other than that paintings have oil in them.”

But the Aquarium of the Pacific, where BP’s initials are modestly inscribed next to a map of the sea otter’s range, could face some heat. “People can see a direct link there. Aquatic animals are being harmed by the disaster,” Dunn said.

“Any organization that has BP’s name on it throughout the world should be saying, `We have a potential issue here,’ ” he said.

There are many such organizations. BP’s corporate largess is evident at cultural institutions worldwide. In the Los Angeles area, besides the aquarium, BP has donated $25 million each to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and public television station KCET since 2004.

Executives at LACMA and KCET said last week that they have not heard of any negative comments about BP’s sponsorship — either before the gulf disaster, or since.

But the oil spill clearly has bruised BP’s corporate image, with Congress, environmental groups and President Obama slamming the oil company’s handling of the crisis.

Terry O’Day, executive director of Environment Now, a Santa Monica advocacy group, said the Aquarium of the Pacific may yet have to make a tough call. “Generally I tend to say, ‘Take the funds and do your good work.’ ” But the gulf spill “does recast things in a different light. This has to be an example that’s on the moral line for them. They’ll have to wrestle with that.”

Just as we have the fair debt collection practice act for those individuals who want to protect themselves from unscrupulous collectors, there is also protection for wealthy donors who provide funding for the arts. But in this case, it’s not clear whether BP can withstand the pressures of social rejection by name association.

Like O’Day, Joel Reynolds, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s programs in Southern California, wouldn’t say whether BP’s name should remain on the exhibit. But “the reality is that anything associated with the name BP is going to be tarnished as a result of this catastrophe.”

BP’s environmental record in Southern California was blemished before these gifts. After a 1990 tanker spill off Huntington Beach, it paid $21.9 million in cleanup and settlement costs. In 2002, it paid the state $45.8 million to settle a suit over pollution from leaking gasoline storage tanks. Later, leakage of smog-forming chemicals at its refinery in Carson resulted in $81 million in fines and other payments.

BP’s Houston-based charitable foundation averaged worldwide donations of nearly $48 million annually from 2006 through 2008, according to its most recent federal filings. BP is one of the corporate sponsors of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.

Toby Odone, a spokesman in London, said Friday that the gulf oil spill will “have no impact whatsoever” on how much the BP Foundation gives, or which recipients it chooses.

Melody Kanschat, LACMA’s president, said there’s no need for museum leaders to strategize over how to address possible complaints.

“We would tackle any issue as it came up,” Kanschat said.

At KCET, BP was the leading funder of “A Place of Our Own” and “Los Ninos en Su Casa,” award-winning educational programs aimed at caregivers of young children. As if the station would consider taking BP’s name from its studio if the worst fears in the gulf came to pass, Executive Vice President Mary Mazur declined to answer. “You’re asking me to look into a crystal ball and speculate, which is something I’m not able to do,” she said.

At the aquarium, officials are getting ready to welcome the public to the newly expanded sea otter exhibit, with its new corporate name.

Schubel, the aquarium’s president, said despite the oil spill, the aquarium is still open for future partnership with BP. He is aware this might upset some environmentalists.

“I worry about these issues all the time,” he said. “But I worry more about how the aquarium can do the right thing, which is to help the public understand.”

My Take:
This is a perfect example of how far wide the impact of this devastating oil spill will spread. Lives were lost and now coast and marsh habitats are likely permanently destroyed along much of the area where the spill took place. In between these harsh life and environmental issues we have the impact at the sociological level. Businesses of all kinds, including non profits will suffer if they were counting on funding from BP, one of their biggest benefactors.

It doesn’t matter if you are an Austin divorce law lawyer, market homes for rent, run an answering service company or an home health services company, if you received funding from BP you will either face losing that funding, or being shunned as a business if your name is associated with BP. Either way, the homes for rent buy, the Austin TX family law attorney , FCRA lawyers, the best providers of call answering service companies, and even the high-paid visiting physicians will all have to balance the benefits of receiving donations and being connected to one of the worst environmental disasters in US history.

Willingness to Offer Comments

Customers have certainly been offered a healthy amount of options when it comes to the methods a person can utilize to contact a company with different comments regarding products or services and proper online reputation management will always take into account the power that consumers often feel they have with current public commentating options such as blogs and social media. The balance must be struck however between allowing a customer to comment publicly on a particular product and the response that might be necessary from the company to reduce the impact of a negative comment on a new item the company just released.

Lohan Wants Designer Court Ankle Bracelet

lohan-court-052410_370x278

Source: AFP

Lindsay Lohan is seeking the help of designer giant Chanel to help customize the alcohol monitoring bracelet the troubled actress was recently court-ordered to wear following her failure to appear in court on a probation violation.

The 23-year-old was ordered to wear a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor (SCRAM) device on Monday after a judge ignored pleas from her lawyer to undergo more frequent testing instead.

Lohan’s attorney had argued the bracelet would interfere with her client’s upcoming acting and modeling assignments.

Now though Lohan is seeking to help camouflage the bracelet with the help of French fashion giant Chanel.

“Can CHANEL please help me out by getting me some stickers to put on my SCRAM bracelet so that I can at least wear a chic dress?! maybe!?,” Lohan tweeted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Lohan faces a probation violation hearing on July 6 in Beverly Hills to address allegations that she had skipped alcohol education classes she was ordered to undergo following her 2007 drunken driving conviction.movies download stats and other Google searches on the actress have remained high on the search engines the last couple of years, as the actress and notorious “party girl” have kept the paparazzi and her fans entangled in her personal escapades.

Lohan

Everything from her love life to her arguments with family members have been fair game and now with the help of social media, even the actress herself is “tweeting” herself a running media frenzy online and elsewhere.

____________________________________

My Take: There is performance testing software available to see if computers are firing on all cylinders. I’m sure the makers of the best Australia software test products could come up with some kind of testing software that would allow officials to find out if Lohan is firing on all her cylinders. Channel? Are you kidding me? The next thing we’ll read about is the actress will want her own set of personally engraved linen napkins every time she walks into a restaurant. Oh, and toss in the engraved linen tablecloths while your at it, and perhaps a private room where she can be waited on, and download foreign films to her laptop and watch the over a big screen while she eats dinner.

The excesses of Hollywood are easy to find these days. But fortunately there are some actors out there who use their fame and fortune to do good things in the world. Drinking has obviously curtailed Lohan’s ability to show real concern for others. Perhaps judges might consider taking away the privilege to work on films and make more millions for those who can’t follow the law. Force Lohan to turn over half her paycheck to one of the thousands of rehab centers out there who are trying to help people who really want to recover from their addictions.

iPad Hits Overseas Markets

ipad

Source: Reuters

Diehard fans mobbed Apple Inc stores in Europe and Asia as The Apple iPad went on sale outside the United States on Friday to the joy of diehard fans in Europe and Asia, many of whom camped outside retailers all night long to get their hands on Apple’s latest product.

The device, a little smaller than a regular notebook computer and with an open, color touchscreen, is designed for surfing the Web, watching movies and reading, and has been hailed by the publishing industry as a potential life-saver.

Shares of Apple, which also makes the iPod and iPhone, jumped as much as 2.3 percent before settling back to trade up 0.5 percent, still outpacing a market that slid more than 1 percent.

Apple sold a million iPads in the United States in the first month after its April 3 debut, exceeding the most bullish pre-launch estimates. Demand was so heavy the company delayed the international launch.

RBC Capital Markets estimated iPad’s total shipments will reach 8.13 million units worldwide by the end of the year — which would translate into at least $4 billion of revenue.

“I wanted to touch it as soon as possible. I felt real excitement when it was finally in my hands,” said Takechiyo Yamanaka, 19, who had camped out in front of Tokyo’s flagship Apple store from Wednesday evening to be the first in line.

“It’s a bit of a gut decision, an emotional decision, because it’s not really rationally justifiable,” said Anna Kistner as she emerged from the Apple store in Munich, Germany with two iPads. “It’s a lot of money.”

The iPad is now on sale in Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Britain, Japan, Australia and Canada.

Prices for the cheapest, Wi-Fi only version range from $499 in the United States to the equivalent of $617 in Britain.

The buzz around the iPad helped propel Apple past Microsoft this week to become the world’s most valuable technology stock, marking a remarkable turnaround of a company that nearly went out of business in the 1990s.

CREATING A NEED

Apple now gets almost three-fifths of its revenue outside the United States, and it is counting on its base of fans who already own an iPod, iPhone or Mac to add the iPad to their collection, as rivals line up with their own tablet offerings.

Analysts said Friday’s muted stock reaction came after a build-up of anticipation ahead of the international roll-out, which will be followed in July with launches in about another nine countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore.

Some analysts highlight concerns that Apple, which contracts out the production of the device and depends on numerous parts suppliers, may have trouble satisfying the surge in demand, driving buyers elsewhere. Dell’s Streak tablet computer will go on sale next month in Britain. Sony Corp and Hewlett-Packard also have tablets in the works.

The iPad — like other tablets — may rely on a greater proportion of novel components that are not commoditized, potentially making a ramp-up of production more difficult, analysts say.

But “Apple has traditionally been pretty good about overcoming these constraints in time,” said Oppenheimer’s Yair Reiner. “The question is, will there be a point where it will lose sales? For that to happen, companies with have to come up with products that are comparable.”

Just ask Pascal Lordon, among the first in line at the flagship Apple store beneath the Louvre in Paris. He already has all Apple’s products and described himself as a big fan.

“The iPhone created a new need but the screen is small. The iPad is more comfortable — it has a real screen,” said the 51-year-old, who works in video editing.

Others were less manic about the Apple brand.

“I’m not going to buy the iPad now as it’s expensive. And I’m a Sony fan,” said Kengo Nakajima, a 19-year-old college student who waited in line with his friend Yamanaka at the Apple store in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district.

First it was the iPhone fix. Of course that prompted more interest in how to find help with iPhone repair. Now, it’s the iPad. But there is competiton.

Amazon, whose Kindle e-book reader is seen as a rival to the iPad, said it would be offering its Kindle iPad application in all countries where the iPad was now on sale.

Analysts at research firm Informa Telecoms & Media believe most iPad sales would be of Wi-Fi only models, citing the limited case for outdoor usage, higher prices for 3G models and the ability to tether the iPad to a mobile phone as reasons.

At London’s Apple store, a circus-like atmosphere prevailed.

“Jake! Jake! Jake!” store staff chanted as Jake Lee, a 17 year-old student who had waited 20 hours, entered.

British actor and technophile Stephen Fry said Apple had proved the skeptics wrong. “Whenever Apple comes up with a new product, the initial response … is always negative, because no one can quite believe it can happen again,” he told Reuters.

Apple has yet to announce a launch date for mainland China, which could prove a much more difficult market to crack. Bootleg versions of the gadget are being snapped up online and in retail malls in the piracy-prone country.

Retailer Best Buy said it was restricting sales at its two British outlets to one iPad per household.

Michito Kimura, a senior analyst at IDC Japan, said the test would come after the honeymoon period.

“The real game will start after ‘core users’ have the devices. I imagine a price cut may be necessary before the Christmas holiday season to stimulate demand.”

______________________________________

My Take: I don’t know too many industries that can’t benefit from the applications of an iPad. Criminal lawyers Redwood City , the makers of metal detectors. Metal detection, collocation companies, San Mateo County criminal attorneys, teachers in Fresno, students on the East coast all say they love the new iPad. It’s slick and sleek, and it’s lightweight and light on the checkbook, too.

But, even if you run the top collocation style company, the question is will the next Apple invention outdo this one? That’s the trouble with Apple: it’s so innovative and quick to market with new products, it’s difficult to keep up with what’s new and whether it’s a vital addition to technology for small business, or just a new toy to show off at cocktail parties. Either way, the iPad is here, and now it’s there, too.

Reaffirming Data Access

There are many companies that start out with limited secure data needs and who only have a few people accessing what would generally be nicely secured data. But one interesting facet of business growth is that it’s not just the facility that needs to be secured when a company grows. A Southern California card access control system is often best installed in such circumstances with a secondary layer of identification required that may have elements of modern biometrics placed within the computer or in other areas of the company to make sure that unauthorized breaches do not lead to immediate access.

People Hold Onto Gold Investments

Despite the significant boost in price that the gold and silver markets experienced in early 2011, it would seem that even though the market has become rather volatile and has encouraged the purchase of gold coins and silver that people are tending to hold onto these investments for what might be the long run even though a recent dip in prices might indicate that it would be a good time to sell such investments and return to the stock market. With the uncertainty that exists in many major international markets it would seem that investors don’t always have a specific plan in place.

Security Checks

If you run a small business, chances are you know little if anything about the value of endpoint compliance. You probably have someone handling your network security software and collocation services. You should starting out and need to learn all about what these services are about and why you need them.

Few Know How Much to Save for Retirement

retirement

SOURCE: CNN Money

According to a recent ING Direct survey, few Americans know how much they’ll need to save for retirement.

Some 44 percent of employed Americans–and even 29 percent of those ages 55 and older–admit they don’t know how much money they will need in retirement, Among those who have a retirement savings goal, a third of current workers 55 and older believe they need $250,000 or less in order to retire. Another third of older workers think they need to save $1 million or more. Here is how to tell if you are saving enough.

Monitor current expenses. Unless you’re intending to enter retirement newly mortgage free or to downsize significantly, estimate that your expenses will remain largely the same in retirement. If you plan to travel or take up expensive hobbies, your cost of living may even increase. “Most people don’t change how much they spend when they retire,” says Constance Stone, a certified financial planner and president of Stepping Stone Financial in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. “Work off the scenario that you are going to spend about the same as you do now in retirement.”

Consistency matters. Beginning to save for retirement as soon as you begin working full time is generally the best way to accumulate a large retirement account balance. “You should be saving a minimum of 10 percent of your gross income in 401(k)’s or taxable accounts,” says Scott Leonard, a certified financial planner and chief investment officer for Trovena in Redondo Beach, Calif. If you’re saving less, step up your retirement savings each time you get a pay boost. “Every time you get a raise, take 20 percent of the value of that raise and put that into savings,” Leonard says.

Factor in Social Security benefits. Most Americans don’t have to finance retirement completely on their own. Some employees still have traditional pensions that guarantee income for life. Retired workers also received Social Security checks worth an average of $1,164.30 each month in 2009. Although you are not likely to be able to sustain your desired lifestyle using Social Security payments alone, you’ll have a nice base to build your savings upon. Workers can boost their Social Security checks by 7 to 8 percent for each year they delay signing up for benefits between ages 62 and 70. You can get an estimate of your future Social Security benefits at ssa.gov. Factor that amount into your savings calculations.

Budget for taxes. Your entire 401(k) balance isn’t available for spending in retirement. Regular income tax is due on withdrawals from traditional 401(k)’s and IRAs. If you withdraw $20,000 from a retirement account and are in the 25 percent tax bracket, $5,000 will be due to Uncle Sam. No income tax is due on Roth 401(k) and Roth IRA distributions in retirement because you already paid tax on that money before it was deposited.

If you run a small business, even from home, don’t forget expenses for corporate gifts can be written off, as many related costs used for things like payroll services and used copy machines.

Consider health expenses. Healthcare expenses can make a huge dent in your retirement savings. Even after retirees qualify for Medicare coverage at age 65, they must still pay for premiums, deductibles, copays, and common uncovered items such as eyeglasses and dental care. Out-of-pocket medical expenses throughout retirement for a 65-year-old couple retiring in 2009 could be between $240,000 (Fidelity Investments estimate) and $338,000 (Employee Benefit Research Institute calculation). The Urban Institute recently projected that median out-of-pocket healthcare costs for retirees will reach $6,200 annually in 2040. None of these estimates include the cost of long-term care, such as assisted living or nursing home care, which could easily be the biggest retirement expense of all. “Just about half of my clients have had knee replacement and then have to get care in the home,” says Susan Spraker, a certified financial planner and president of Spraker Wealth Management in Maitland, Fla. “People are not planning for what are they going to do when they can’t live on their own anymore.”

Picture your desired lifestyle. A retirement spent traveling the globe or with an ocean view is obviously going to cost more than downsizing into a smaller house or condo. Those who choose a low-cost place to retire may be able to get by with significantly less money. “Someone who lives in a community in rural South Carolina is going to need a different amount of money than someone who lives in New York City,” says Spraker. “It completely depends on the person’s lifestyle and how early they retire.” Retirees willing to work part time in retirement can also get by with less in savings, and those willing to delay retirement can shorten the number of retirement years they need to finance.

Estimate life expectancy. The wild card in retirement planning is how long you will live. Your nest egg must be divvied up to provide a stream of income that will last as long as you do. Spraker says retirement savers should plan on living into their 90s, while Stone recommends budgeting for age 100. Couples should also factor in the woman’s typically longer life expectancy.

MY TAKE: Saving for retirement in this economy is a tricky issue. If you run a small company, whether its providing Cannon copier parts, making imprinted school T shirts , or providing in-house time and attendance solutions for SMB markets, you might be struggling to set aside even a few extra dollars for your IRA, given the current economic situation out there.

Experts suggest a few things to give up right away that could make room for even a small contribution to your IRA until things get better. Here’s a short list of five things you can do easily:

· Starbucks coffee runs (average weekly expenses for typical consumer: $22)

· Dry Cleaning Services (average weekly expenses for typical consumer: $15)

· Car Wash: save money, go green and get out a bucket and a sponge. (Save an average of $17 a week if you do weekly washes.)

· Change your own oil (save an average of $19 every three months)

· Lower your cable plan from expanded to basic for a year and join Netflix. Save on TV and move rental fees.

How ACH Delays Work

When a company has an account with a particular bank, has its credit cards with another bank and then has its credit card payments or perhaps its merchant accounts handled by another financial entity, an automated clearinghouse is used to ensure that the process of dealing with so many financial entities isn’t confusing and more costly than it needs to be. Handling the processing of various payments through automated clearinghouses is a process of which oversight is provided by the federal government and it means that the funds utilized by a business aren’t available for deposit immediately.

Level of Machinery

When a business finds that its current equipment is subpar and starts to consider looking for new options, it might be the case that new equipment is amazingly expensive and that equipment financing is something that needs to be considered so that purchases can be made over time. Beyond this idea, it’s also a good idea to consider which grade of machine is truly required for the operation as professional grade machines can be fairly expensive. Sometimes it’s worth purchasing or even leasing a consumer or home business grade machine, especially if it’s not going to be used twenty four hours a day.

Money Circulation in Offshore Banks

For individuals looking to see how an offshore banking institution might benefit their current financial circumstances, it’s a good idea to look at the hard numbers associated with offshore bank accounts to determine if such a financial situation is a good idea. For example, many people might be surprised to learn that offshore banking actually circulates in excess of two trillion dollars in funds every day of the year. One of the reasons for this significant number is the healthy expansion of different and new offshore banking options that have been created in the last decade or so.

Supporting a New Business

There are many avenues for starting a new business and when a person decides to finally take the plunge, they might realize that to support a new business with enough business working capital, they might have to have another type of business functioning at the same time where investments from the profits of another business can be made in the new venture. It’s also possible to put every single ounce of energy into a new business without the financial support of another but this is a risk and it’s not for everyone so some research should be handled.

Least Debt Ridden States

Some interesting information came out recently regarding how much debt has been borrowed by the average resident in the United States and it would seem that people living in Wisconsin would be least likely to seek out a debt settlement because they have the lowest average amount of credit card debt for any state in the United States with the average coming in a just a hair over five thousand dollars. They have a medium cost of living in that state and median income is also running in the middle of the road as far as other states are concerned.

Explaining Zero Percent Interest

While phrases like “zero percent interest” often cover the airwaves during commercials for things like automobiles and home loans, sometimes the interest offered isn’t actually zero percent. Many low interest offers for things like new cars and credit cards will offer zero percent on something called “APR” which stands for “Annual Percentage Rate.” This is a set number for the lowest interest rate available for an account. A zero percent APR means that the interest will be very low but will likely not be at a true zero percent. All it takes is a bit of reading of the fine print to determine this.

Quick Cash Loans

These days everyone could use a little more cash. With rising gas costs, the unstable housing market, high foreclosure rate, medical emergencies, and other day-to-day issues, a quick cash loan can come in handy. There are companies that will offer various types of high-interest loans, but there are also companies that will buy your things and will give you cash for cars. If you want cash for car, it makes sense to use a reliable and trustworthy company. With a simple online application you can have an idea of what your vehicle is worth and you can be on your way to making some money.

Gulf Oil Spill Exceeds Exxon Valdez

oil-spill

Source: Associated Press

Officials report that a plug procedure in the blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico seemed to be working, but new estimates showed the oil spill off the coast of Louisiana exceeds the Exxon Valdez as the worst in history.

A team of scientists trying to determine how much oil has been flowing since the offshore rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20 and sank two days later found the rate was more than twice and possibly up to five times as high as previously thought.

The fallout from the spill has stretched all the way to Washington, where the head of the federal agency that oversees offshore drilling resigned Thursday and President Barack Obama sought to counter criticism by announcing a series of new steps to deal with the spill’s aftermath.

Even using the most conservative estimate, the new numbers mean the leak has grown to nearly 19 million gallons over the past five weeks. If the oil filled gallon milk jugs lined up side by side, there would be enough to reach from New York to Chicago and back.

In the worst case scenario, if 39 million gallons has spilled, the oil would fill enough jugs to stretch from the Louisiana marshes to Prince William Sound in Alaska. That’s where the Exxon Valdez ran aground in 1989, spilling nearly 11 million gallons.

“Now we know the true scale of the monster we are fighting in the Gulf,” said Jeremy Symons, vice president of the National Wildlife Federation. “BP has unleashed an unstoppable force of appalling proportions.”

Legal aspects uncertain at this point
We don’t know yet what the fallout will be from the disaster, but criminal defense attorneys are likely scanning the aspects of this potential hornets nest of a law suit, as are
Dallas criminal defense lawyers and Houston criminal attorneys, and naturally lawyers for BP. The legal aspects are uncertain, but what is certain is that BP will be doing a significant amount of damage control going forward.

BP and the Coast Guard estimated soon after the explosion that about 210,000 gallons a day was leaking, but scientists who watched underwater video of well had been saying for weeks it was probably more.

U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt said two different teams of scientists calculated the well has been spewing between 504,000 and more than a million gallons a day.

BP spokesman Steve Rinehart said the previous estimate came from industry experts and scientists based on the best data available at the time. Asked for the company’s response to the new numbers, he replied: “It does not and will not change the response. We are going all out on our response. This is an all-out response and we’re doing everything we can to stop this.”

Marine scientists also said Thursday they have discovered a massive new plume of what they believe to be oil deep beneath the Gulf, stretching 22 miles from the leaking wellhead northeast toward Mobile Bay, Ala. The discovery by researchers on the University of South Florida College of Marine Science’s Weatherbird II vessel is the second significant undersea plume recorded since the rig exploded.

Last week, BP inserted a mile-long tube to siphon some of the oil from the gushing well into a tanker. It sucked up 924,000 gallons, but engineers had to dismantle it so they could start the risky procedure known as a top kill to try to cut off the flow altogether by shooting heavy drilling fluid into the well.

________________________________

My Take: Sopping up this mess is going to take a lot of time and the odds are better for you on any one of the online gambling sites if you think you can bet in favor of BP’s ability to come out of this without significant corporate damage to undo. Even the toughest casinos online have better odds for you if you think the damage to small businesses from this disaster won’t reverberate for decades to come. We are still hearing stories about fishing industry families having to turn to one debt relief program or another to recover from the losses from the Exxon spill. Trying to eliminate credit debt is only half of their problem; overcoming the environmental trauma is another.

Wrist Bands Get the Ban

Fashion Bonkers For BandzSOURCE: TIME

The Bandz have been banned.

Schools in several states, including New York, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts, have blacklisted Silly Bandz, those stretchy, colorful bracelets that are creeping up the forearms of school kids across the U.S. And starting this week, all 800-some kids at my son’s elementary school in Raleigh, N.C., were commanded to leave at home their collections of rubber band–like bracelets, which retail for about $5 per pack of 24. What could possibly be so insidious about a cheap silicone bracelet?

“It’s a distraction,” says Jill Wolborsky, a fourth-grade teacher at my son’s school, who banned them from her classroom before the principal implemented a schoolwide ban. One student stole some confiscated Bandz from her desk, choosing them over the cash in her drawer.

Students fiddle with them during class and arrange swaps - trading, say, a bracelet with a mermaid for one with a dragon - when they should be concentrating on schoolwork, teachers say. Sometimes a trade goes bad - kids get buyer’s remorse too - and hard feelings, maybe even scuffles, ensue.

That’s what prompted Karen White, principal of Snow Rogers Elementary School in Gardendale, Ala., in October to become one of the first administrators to forbid students their Bandz. “We try not to limit their freedom of expression and what they wear, but when this became a problem, I knew we had to nip it in the bud pretty quickly,” says White, who has since extended an olive branch in the form of monthly Silly Bandz days.

Silly Bandz are the latest in a long list of kid-centric fads - in the tradition of Cabbage Patch Kids, Beanie Babies, PokÉmon cards and Crocs. BCP Imports LLC, the small business in Toledo, Ohio, that’s behind the bracelets, was not prepared for the frenzy. It’s increased its workforce from 20 employees to 200 in the past year and just this week added 22 phone lines to keep up with inquiries. The company sells millions of packs a month, and Robert Croak, the president, can still hardly believe it. (He took my call after hanging up with Macy’s, which is interested in creating a Silly Bandz float for its storied Thanksgiving Day parade.)

Croak got inspired about three years ago at a product show in China, where a Japanese artist had devised a rubber band cute enough to escape the trash bin. Though Silly Bandz have been out for two years, they began catching on a year ago - Alabama was an early adopter, as were New Jersey and Tennessee. They’re just now gaining traction in California and Texas.

“They’re getting banned because kids play with them so much,” says Croak, who maintains they’re the right product at the right time, a cost-conscious trinket in tough economic times that can even be a learning tool for little ones, kind of like flexible flash cards.

His company receives about 500 fan letters a week. One, signed by a 10-year-old named Logan Librett and a few of his friends in New Rochelle, N.Y., suggested a way to circumvent all the bothersome Silly Bandz restrictions: “Some schools in New York have banned them, but we have ideas that might change that … clear silly bands that teachers can’t see and only glow in the dark.”

Just in case the company bites, Librett offered his address. He’s still waiting.

MY TAKE: I can certainly understand banning sexy costumes Halloween, or suggestive Australia jackets on the playground. Afterall, Halloween costumes have gotten a lot more risqué since the days of sheets for ghosts were popular. But rubber bands? I don’t think the school’s have their eye on the ball, quite frankly. If kids want to wear something, banning them is going to twice as popular as ever. All kids want to do what they aren’t supposed to do, within reason, and this is one of those within reason issues.

I bet the top medical equipment companies out there would love to get their products out in front of so many people and garner the attention that these silly but colorful little rubber bands have. I can even see how they’d make their way over to an Australia shop for novelties and other gift items. Everyone wants to get in on trends that start in American back yards, or play yards, whichever the case may be.

Today’s engine management system is a direct descendant of the efforts that ramped up into high gear during the 1980s when there were significant enhancements in fuel economy introduced by many manufacturers in the years before SUVs came around and slowed that advancement for a while.
